As a transplant to the San Francisco Bay area from Washington, DC, I’m still awed by the beauty, diversity and abundance of California’s coasts and oceans, and the commitment of the state government and local communities to protect and enhance the
MPA monitoring is an inspiring story of how we pull together as a human network to establish California as the global leader in coupling ocean health management with groundbreaking science.
We now have teams of citizen scientists in the region who can continue monitoring, building capacity is an essential element of creating a sustainable monitoring program.
We created a new snapshot of kelp forests in the region, and a network of researchers, students, and citizens who are mobilized to track this ecosystem into the future.
