Reconnecting with the North Central Coast

July 28, 2015

The North Central Coast region—spanning diverse ecosystems from Alder Creek near Point Arena south to Pigeon Point—has reached the 5-year anniversary of its established network of marine protected areas (MPAs). Read on to see what Ocean Science Trust and our partners have been up to, where we’re headed, and how members of the North Central Coast ocean community can join the conversation!

The Journey So Far

The State of the Region

Ocean Science Trust, in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and California Ocean Protection Council, is developing comprehensive State of the North Central Coast Region report. Planned for release in Fall 2015, this report will provide a solid science foundation to inform the 5-year management review of the MPAs, which will take place in 2016.

Sharing, Engaging, and Looking Ahead

We are excited to reconnect with members of the North Central Coast ocean community, to learn the best ways to share information, communicate the Baseline Program findings, and begin discussing long-term monitoring interests and priorities. We look forward to attending the Discover the Coast @ Point Arena Community Celebration on August 1. Be sure to swing by our table in City Hall or catch us on the coastal trail on the way to the Point Arena Lighthouse!

Check out the recently released North Central Coast informational flier and timeline for an overview of Ocean Science Trust activities in the North Central Coast. Also stay tuned for:

  • Additional blog posts and online reports, including the release of the State of the North Central Coast Region report and other Baseline Program findings
  • Launch of the online North Central Coast Monitoring Survey and a Community Interests & Priorities Questionnaire
  • Presentations at the Western Society of Naturalists meeting in Sacramento November 5-8, 2015
  • Local community events hosted by Ocean Science Trust in Fall 2015

Log on to the North Central Coast page on OceanSpaces.org to access reports, data, and find out about our upcoming activities on the North Central Coast.
