Sharing results from Marine Protected Area monitoring on the North Coast

June 15, 2017

Humboldt State University's Marine and Coastal Science Institute hosted a day-long symposium in May to share key findings from baseline monitoring of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the North Coast region. Together, these 11 state-funded projects form the first comprehensive study of northern California’s coastal ocean, from the California-Oregon border to Point Arena, in Mendocino County.

The symposium was attended by over 100 people, including researchers, students, Tribes and tribal communities, fishermen, management agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Presentations focused on the results of baseline monitoring and highlighted the partnerships that gathered data and knowledge on the North Coast.

Following presentations of the results, a workshop brought many voices together in break-out groups to discuss ways to build on this knowledge, and identify opportunities to inform management decisions for the MPA network and the State of California.

A summary of the symposium and videos of each presentation is available on the HSU Marine Lab website

Technical reports and data from each of the 11 state-funded baseline monitoring projects will be coming to OceanSpaces soon.
