Data Package Summary

This data set is a part of Ecotrust's project entitled: Establishing a Baseline and Assessing Spatial and Socioeconomic Change in the California Central Coast Commercial and CPFV Fisheries. This project is a component of the Central Coast Baseline Program, the goal of which is to establish a benchmark of ecological and socioeconomic conditions at the time MPAs were implemented, and to explore any initial changes that may have occurred since MPAs were established. The Central Coast region includes all state waters between Pigeon Point and Point Conception.

This report was developed in collaboration with the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG). Ex-vessel landings receipt data from key commercial fisheries contained in DFG’s Commercial Fisheries Information System (CFIS) database were accessed under a non-disclosure agreement. As the CFIS database is continually updated it is important to document the date the CFIS database was queried so that the status of the data sets used are known. For 1992–2009 landings data the CFIS database was queried on March 9th, 2011, and for 2010-2011 landings data the CFIS database was queried on April 18th, 2012. The data were sent to Ecotrust by CDFG staff.

This data set consists of data compiled and analyzed using California Department of Fish and Game commercial fishing landings data for the years 1992 to 2011. These data have been summarized and confidential data in which data points that consists of less than three fishermen were suppressed to protect individual information. All dollar values presented in this report are corrected for inflation, and are reported in 2010 dollars using the Implicit Price Deflators for Gross Domestic Product from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. This data set investigates initial changes in key commercial fisheries in the Central Coast Region from 1992-2011.

The primary goal of this project was to collect up-to-date information on historical trends, current socioeconomic conditions, and the spatial distribution and economic value of key commercial fisheries and the commercial passenger fishing vessel (CPFV) fleet in the Central Coast Region.
