The first phase of marine protected area monitoring in California's North Coast is wrapping up and our team is gearing up to share results. We are excited to share a comprehensive State of the Region report as well as a series of shorter Snapshot reports, culminating in a series of community gatherings in the North Coast November 1-3, 2017. To stay updated on all products and events, join the North Coast Monitoring Community.

NOW AVAILABLE: STATE OF THE CALIFORNIA NORTH COAST Report

We are so pleased to announce the release of the State of the California North Coast report!

Learn about the biological, ecological, oceanographic, and socioeconomic conditions around the time of marine protected area (MPA) implementation on the North Coast. The North Coast region includes more than 1,000 square miles of state water from Point Arena to the California-Oregon border, and this report establishes a benchmark of conditions against which future changes can be compared.

During the baseline monitoring period from 2013-2017, 11 projects worked across the North Coast to collect data and create a comprehensive understanding of the region. More than 30 organizations, including scientists, fishermen, tribal governments, citizen groups, and others, contributed to this summary report. For more information about the baseline studies, explore the North Coast Monitoring page.

take the NORTH COAST survey

Calling all coordinators and managers of monitoring projects in the North Coast! Make sure your research is recorded in the Monitoring Survey. Results will identify the geographic and temporal coverage of monitoring activities inside and outside of North Coast marine protected areas (MPAs). Data will highlight opportunities to partner and build upon capacity in the region to inform statewide MPA monitoring moving forward. The survey documents monitoring projects' organizational structure and function, sampling structure and metrics, and project capacity.

Explore California Coastal Monitoring on the Monitoring Dashboard

A survey of North Coast monitoring projects is currently underway to document research and activities both inside and outside of marine protected areas in the North Coast. Results from the survey will contribute to a statewide Monitoring Dashboard, which you can explore for information on monitoring in other regions, including the North Central Coast, Central Coast, and South Coast.
