Beach Watch is a long-term shoreline-monitoring project that uses citizen-science groups to survey beaches within the Gulf of the Farallones and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries. As part of this project, researchers will compile and describe existing Beach Watch data to describe historical trends in the North Central Coast region. Live and dead bird and marine mammal data will be analyzed to describe spatial and temporal patterns and historical trends. The project will also provide a description of marine mammal sightings and human uses inside and outside MPAs and across the surveyed region. In the third year of the project, researchers will compile this information in a way that can contribute toward an integrated and synthesized assessment of ecosystem conditions at the time of MPA implementation and initial MPA effects following MPA implementation. Additionally, data from citizen science groups and other monitoring methods will be compared to provide recommendations for long-term monitoring.
