Rocky Intertidal Snapshot Report

The Rocky Intertidal Snapshot Report is the first report in the South Coast Snapshot Series. It highlights key scientific findings from the rocky intertidal baseline monitoring project, which was part of the state-funded South Coast MPA Baseline Program. Featuring one of the most well-researched ecosystems in the South Coast, the Rocky Intertidal Snapshot Report provides a picture of life at the interface: where the rocky shore meets the ocean.

The rocky intertidal monitoring project highlighted in this work was incredibly collaborative: it brought together researchers from five academic institutions, representing two long-term monitoring programs: PISCO and MARINe. It also connected with a long-term citizen science monitoring program: LiMPETS. In this project, researchers conducted countless hours of fieldwork, analysis, and reporting from 2012-2014, and they combined this work with pre-existing data that had already been collected by their monitoring programs to strengthen their understanding of conditions in the region’s rocky intertidal habitats.

This snapshot report, and the entire South Coast Snapshot Series, provides a foundation for rigorous science-informed decisions in the region. It is a key ingredient in the State of the California South Coast Region report, which provides a comprehensive ecological and socioeconomic baseline characterization of the region.
