Kelp and Shallow Rock Snapshot Report

Kelp and Shallow Rock Snapshot Report

The Kelp and Shallow Rock Snapshot Report is the second report in the South Coast Snapshot Series. Featuring one of the most productive South Coast ecosystems, it highlights key scientific findings from two state-funded South Coast MPA Baseline Program projects: one led by Reef Check California and the other led by Vantuna Research Group and PISCO. The report provides a window into life under the canopy—a diverse oceanscape that is home to a number of important commercial and recreational fisheries, and a prime destination for underwater photographers, divers, and snorkelers.

In 2011 and 2012, researchers and citizen scientists conducted over 250 surveys from Point Conception to San Diego. Surveys occurred in each MPA that includes shallow rock habitat and comparable reference areas. This monitoring expanded on previous assessments of South Coast kelp forests and shallow rocky reefs to develop a more complete picture of the region, further strengthening our scientific understanding of these important South Coast ecosystems.

This snapshot report, and the entire South Coast Snapshot Series, provides a foundation for rigorous science-informed decisions in the region. It is a key ingredient in the State of the California South Coast Region report, which provides a comprehensive ecological and socioeconomic baseline characterization of the region.
